Japan secured the last available place in the women's line-up at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games curling competition when they beat Norway by 10-4 in Sunday evening's second women's play-off at the World Curling Federation's Olympic Qualification event in Fuessen, Germany.

To reach this game, the Norwegians had beaten Germany in a tie-breaker while the Japanese had lost out in the first play-off game to China, who also qualified for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Japan opened the scoring, taking one point in the first end when skip Ayumi Ogasawara hit out a Norwegian stone.

In the second end, Norway's skip Marianne Roervik hit for two points. She added to her lead in the third end when Ogasawara missed on a double take-out attempt to give up a steal of one point, moving the score-line to 3-1 for Norway.

Japan took a single point from the fourth end to narrow the Norwegian lead and they then levelled the score in the fifth end with a single steal when Roervik tried to come in off a stone on the wing and just missed her second target, a Japanese stone sitting on the button.

After the break, Norway blanked the sixth end and then scored one point in the seventh end with a draw onto the button by Roervik, who was facing four Japanese counters when she delivered.

The eighth end was crucial. Japan rolled a succession of stones into the house and then finally Ogasawara played a hit and stay to score six points for a 9-4 lead that completely changed the game.

In the ninth end, Roervik was heavy with her final draw and gave Japan a steal of one point. The Norwegians then conceded with the final score 10-4.

This result means that Ogasawara and her team of Yumie Funayama (third), Kaho Onodera (second) and lead Michiko Tomabechi (lead), supported by alternate Chinami Yoshida and coach Fuji Miki, qualified Japan as the last nation in the women's curling competition at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Afterwards Ogasawara said: "I'm so happy and I really wanted to win. I appreciate what the coaches have done for us, so thank you so much to them.”

Speaking about the game-turning eighth end, she added: "They played well and we were patient. We got our chance in the eighth end and we made it.

As a result, the following women’s teams have now qualified for the curling competition at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain (Scotland's world championship points are used for qualification purposes), Canada, USA, Denmark, Korea, China, Japan and Russia (as host).

In addition to the women’s teams, the following men’s teams have qualified for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games: Canada, Sweden, Great Britain (Scotland's world championship points are used for qualification purposes), Norway, Denmark, China, Switzerland, Germany, USA and Russia (as host).
